I’m a watch fanatic and my favorite style, by far, is the diver watch. Up to this point, I’ve purchased cheaper watches, like Orient, and other Swiss-made watches at a lower price-point, like Davosa, with great success. I love all of those watches and have nothing bad to say about them but I wanted to buy a true modern classic with a high level of pedigree, that would be a generational watch that I could pass on to my son.
Enter my first “expensive” watch, the Omega Seamaster 300M with the revolutionary co-axial movement. Why did I go with the Seamaster? Well enter my love of diver-style watches, the fact that Rolex divers can’t be purchased directly from an AD if you don’t already have a relationship and on the grey market they are horribly overpriced helped narrow the field. I looked very closely at the offerings from Breitling and the Omega slightly outdid them in my opinion. (Hint at what my next watch will be.) Finally, I was a huge N64 fan and GoldenEye was my childhood. James Bond wore one of the first Seamaster 300s, albeit was a quartz model and I was sold.
Then came time to look for the exact one I wanted. From the start, I knew I wanted one with a blue face but as I researched and looked at as many as possible I surprisingly found myself falling in love with the black face. What didn’t change was that it had to have the waves. From there I decided it had to have the co-axial movement which further narrowed my search down. I decided against buying a brand new one but if I was going to go with used it had to have all the paperwork and been properly maintained. I like larger watches so the 39mm version was an instant no go for me.
I finally found mine for sale, it is a 2007 model but had been serviced by Omega in 2019 and the seller allowed me to have Omega look it over before purchasing it who confirmed it was genuine and in proper working order and not needing a service. We agreed on a price and I got to take this beauty home with me. It doesn’t hurt that these have been increasing in value which is a good selling point with the wife but as I stated earlier, I have every intention of passing this on to my son so it will not be sold.
I’m in love with my “new” watch. I love the hands, the dial, and I like that most non-watch people don’t know what it is. I’m not constantly asked if it’s “a real Rolex” like my friends who have Rolex’s as I didn’t buy this for anyone else, it’s just for me and my enjoyment. Not to mention there’s been a huge uptick in people being violently robbed of their watches in the past year. No reason to add that risk needless to my family and my health and wellbeing.
I’ve been wearing it everywhere and I like that it’s not so expensive that I’m fearful of it getting scratched. If and when it does it’ll hurt for a bit but I’ll get over it, it’s a tool watch and made to be worn. Plus I figured when I send it in for it’s normal servicing I can have the crystal replaced and the rest of it polished, as needed.
Stay safe, be kind, and help those in need.
